SCHOOL HIGHLIGHT- RESTORATIVE PRACTICES:  Did you know that Long Lake Staff and Students engage in a strategy called Restorative Practices?  This is an approach to discipline that identifies the skill deficits students have that cause challenging behaviors.  Often times we find that a behavior may be a result of a student not having appropriate skills to ask another to play, or their frustration tolerance is low and a meltdown or showdown occurs. In the age of technology, those social skills are not where they used to be. Restorative Practices help students to understand the impact of their actions on others and gives dialog to talk through a problem.  Instead of only issuing a consequence after a behavior, we’ve been working to help students repair the harm caused on others and find ways to “make things right”.   One way to do this is through a Restorative Circle or “talk it out” sessions.  There are several questions that are asked in these conversations, that might also be applicable at home:

  1. What happened and what were you thinking about at the time of the incident?
  2. What have you thought about since?
  3. Who has been affected by this and how?
  4. What about this has been hardest for you?
  5. What do you think needs to be done to make things right?
