Amanda Porter
Neurologist
Central High School, Class of 2011
Amanda Porter graduated from TCAPS in 2011. After graduation, Amanda attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan then went to Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota, and completed her neurology residency at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida. She will be a board certified Neurologist, pursuing behavioral neurology, as of June, 2023.
While attending Traverse City Central High School, she participated in several school programs and organizations, including National Honor Society (NHS), XC ski team, and JV soccer. Amanda says TCAPS provided her opportunities to grow and learn in areas she was interested in, in addition to allowing her to dual enroll in NMC classes when she had completed all of her AP courses.
She added, "Dr. Czarny (AP bio), Pam Forton, Marcie King, and Katy Shelley-Barnes were all very impactful on me. They made me feel like my voice was heard and that I had true potential."
Since leaving TCAPS, Amanda is most proud of graduating medical school, having a baby while being a medical resident, and surviving medical residency in a global pandemic.
When asked what advice she has for students today, Amanda said, "Enjoy your time, enjoy what you're learning. You are the limitation of your potential. You don't have to be the smartest in the room or with the most resources. If you are dedicated and persistent, you can accomplish anything."
